The Community and Neighborhood committee wishes to thank everyone again for all of the support for the backpack program last year. This fall we will restart our collection of food in order to continue to deliver backpacks to middle school families. In the meantime, we are collecting school supplies for students in need at Washburn High School and Justice Page Middle School. Please put school supplies in the food collection baskets. St. John’s Book Club will meet Sunday, September 10 (originally scheduled for Sunday, August 13) at 11:30 a.m. in St. John’s lounge to discuss Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say by Adam Hamilton. Jennifer Belz has ordered a few copies for those who have been unable to find copies at your local library/bookstore. A Community Meal will be served at noon Saturday, August 26 at St. John's. Come and help...come and eat! St. John’s volunteers welcome guests, help prepare food and beverages, bus and wash dishes, and clean up. The time commitment is about two hours, 11:30-1:30 each fourth Saturday. If you would like to help, you may sign up on the poster outside Fellowship Hall, or contact the church office to volunteer or for more information. Bring your family... invite a friend or neighbor!
This year, we are partnering with St. Thomas the Apostle, a Catholic parish in Linden Hills, for worship at the Lake Harriet Bandshell on Sept. 3 at 10:00 a.m. We are excited to be sharing in this ecumenical service with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Worship will be led by leaders and volunteers from both churches. There will be an ad hoc combined choir, with rehearsal at St. Thomas on Aug. 30 at 7:00 p.m. Ask Samuel Grace for more information. Loaves & Fishes St. John’ turn to cook Monday, September 25 at 2:30 p.m. TRUST congregations join together to prepare and serve meals at Loaves and Fishes at St. Stephen’s Church, Clinton Avenue, on the 4th Monday six times a year. Celebrate a special day in your life or memorialize or honor a loved one by ordering altar flowers. You are welcome to take home the beautiful arrangements after worship on Sunday. Please sign up on the chart located on the bulletin board outside of Fellowship Hall. The cost of the two arrangements is currently $30. (Make checks payable to St. John’s and write “Flowers” in the memo line.) There are still several dates open on the 2017 flower chart.
