God’s Work. Our Hands

On Sunday. September 13th we continued our new tradition in participating with the other +8,000 congregations in the ELCA nationwide with God’s Work-Our Hands Sunday. GWOH Sunday is a day where we take the love of God into our own hands and clean up the neighborhood, or participate in some good work for our neighbor’s benefit. This year we hosted an event AT CHURCH, outside, tying fleece blankets for donation to those needing warmth.  Thank you to those who came to help...not only for your service, but as our first real chance to gather and connect with other members, even [...]

Thoughts from Pastor Mark — September 2020

Normally, this month’s edition is ramping up for the program year. Normally I am excited to read about plans for Sunday School, Confirmation, TRUST Youth and our own Youth Group stuff. Normally, our director of Worship and Music will have prepared the choirs, brass, and handbells for the celebration of our restart of the program year. Normally... normally? Remember those days when there was a normal? The fact that there is not a normal anymore is the biggest change for me. And while I like routines, traditions, and the expected, I am also one who likes to try new things [...]

Holy Conversations

A new session of 'Holy Conversations' will begin at the end of September or early October.  The virtual book study of “Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US” by Lenny Duncan has wrapped up, and so we break for a few weeks before resuming these 'Holy Conversations.' We hope you will consider engaging in the conversation.

Connecting and Giving During COVID Time

Even though we are practicing physical separation, the ministry needs of our community still exist; so PLEASE keep your financial support coming. Super easy and totally secure and confidential. Or, 2.  Mail your check to the church office. The Morning Bookkeeper David, Business Administrator Dan or Assistant for Ministry [...]

Justice Page Food Backpack Program

Justice Page Middle School still needs our support. Given the current health risk situation, the Social Workers at Page Middle School have asked if instead of filling backpacks with food we might provide Target and CUB gift cards for hungry families. The Social Workers will give gift cards to the families who need them most. You can help in these ways: Purchase Target or CUB gift cards at the store or online and have them mailed directly to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 4842 Nicollet Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55419; Mail a check to church with BACKPACK PROGRAM in the memo line; [...]
