THANK YOU! "Thank you so much to everyone who donated to the school supplies drive for Washburn! The community's response to this project was incredible. After counting and organizing all of the donations--including over 250 notebooks!--18 backpacks were filled with all the supplies a high school student might need. On top of that, monetary donations totaled to $745! This money will be put towards several Target gift cards, which will allow students to purchase specific supplies and personal necessities. Thanks to the awesome South Minneapolis community, these students will be fully prepared to start their school year. Samantha is inspired [...]
"And the word became flesh and dwelt among us....full of grace and truth." All are welcome to St. John’s Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols, Candles, and Holy Communion on December 24 at 4 PM. Together, we proclaim and celebrate the true light of Christ which has come, for all people, into the darkness of our world. In spite of all that is broken in our world, we proclaim the eternal Word being born among us. God comes to us with redemption and hope. Come one and all! “O Come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!”
As we prepare to celebrate our Savior’s birth, please set aside the first three Wednesdays in Advent for a community meal followed by a beautiful contemplative worship service featuring a new liturgy called Behold Our Light. Our meal is from 5:45-6:45 PM in the fellowship hall. Worship will begin at 7 PM in the sanctuary. Bring a friend, neighbor or relative. All are welcome!
The young Children of St. John’s presented a Christmas program that told the story of the Nativity on Dec. 20. Thank you to the children! Thanks also to all who attended and joined in the singing. This program was sponsored by St. John's Sunday School.
This article comes with my apologies to Charles Dickens (and Andy Williams). It was Education Minnesota Weekend (formerly known as MEA Weekend) in October when I entered a large dis-count store and was surprised to find Christmas décor already on display. I sighed in disbelief and little disgust. It wasn’t even Halloween yet, for crying out loud! (Wow… I kind of sounded like Ebenezer Scrooge.) I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised since the purchasing habits and the marketability of Christmas is a powerful force in our economic system, but still… in October? REALLY?!? Humbug. About two weeks later, I [...]
Cookies are needed for the receptions following both Messiah performances on December 12 & 13. St. John's Music Series hosts lovely receptions following both concerts for well over 300 people combined between the two events. It is a wonderful time of fellowship and celebration of all the talented musicians that are so dedicated to these performances. As you begin your holiday baking, please consider setting aside 2-3 dozen as a contribution for our receptions. You may leave your cookies in the kitchen labeled for the Messiah reception. Thank you for your gift of hospitality!
A Christmas smorgasbord potluck? Ya, sure, you betcha! Please mark your calendars for Sunday, December 20 after worship to attend St. John's second potluck event of the year, a Christmas smorgasbord! Please bring your favorite holiday dish to share; drinks will be provided. A short Christmas program will take place during the meal, and there will be an activity for children as well. This event is being co-sponsored by the Membership and CYF committees. Come join us for food, fellowship and music as we await together the arrival of the Christ Child.
